Microsoft has created a completely new administration UI for Internet
Information Services (IIS) 7.0 which ships with Windows Server 2008. The
administration UI you just installed is a version of the Windows Server 2008
which will allow you to remotely manage IIS 7.0 from Windows XP, Windows Server
2003 and Windows Vista.
Note: The administration UI is only for administering Internet
Information Services (IIS) 7.0 from Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 and Windows
Vista.
Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0 Manager is an administration UI that
provides end users and administrators with a way to remotely manage IIS 7
servers from Windows Vista, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. A server
administrator can perform almost any IIS task that they could if they were
sitting at the actual server machine and site/application owners can modify and
view settings that have been delegated to them by the server administrator.
Features:
- Remotely manage IIS 7 from Windows Vista, Windows XP and Windows Server
2003.
- Connect directly to a Server or to an individual site or application.
- View your remote site/application content directly from within the tool.
- Installs even when you don’t have IIS 7 on the local machine.
- Allows multiple simultaneous connections to servers, sites and
applications.
Benefits:
- Manage IIS 7 servers remotely.
- Allows site/application owners to connect to and manger their content
directly – no longer having to call the server admin.
- Familiar and easy to use administration tool - same functionality as the
Windows Server 2008 administration tool.
- Standalone install – no need to install the full IIS server on your
local machine in order to manage a remote machine.
- Easily manage multiple servers, sites and applications.
The following prerequisites must be fulfilled in order to install the new
Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0 Manager:
- You must have the Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0 or greater
installed.
- If you are installing on Windows Vista:
- You must have Windows Vista Service Pack 1 beta installed
- You must have the Internet Information Services 7.0 Management

- If you are installing on Windows Server 2003:
- You must have Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 installed.
The following issues are known for this release:
- After opening the Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0 Manager the
Start Page will be displayed. In the "Connection tasks" section of the start
page there is a link called "Connect to localhost". Clicking on this link on
Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 will cause a "Failed to connect" error to
appear.
- After opening the Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0 Manager
the local server connection node will appear on the treeview. Clicking on
this node on Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 will cause a "Failed to
connect" error to appear.
Installation issues:
- The 32 bit version of Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0 Manager
will not function correctly on 64 bit version of Windows XP, Windows Server
2003 and Windows Vista. You should ensure that you install the 64 bit
version Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0 Manager on 64 bit operating
systems.
